Countdown 2 days til start Marion-Bermuda 2017 - Mahina Kai
2 days until the start! Mahina Kai is now positioned at Beverly Yacht Club, the departure host.
Mahina Kai is Hawaiian for "Moon over water". Coincidentally the full moon greeted Mahina Kai in Marion tonight. If you think the moon looks a little smaller than normal, you have a good eye. This full moon is known as the strawberry minimoon because the moon is now at apogee, its greatest distance from earth in its irregular orbit.
The moon appears about 14% smaller than when it is at perigee. You can read all about it at space.com:

Summer 2015 will be remembered as one of the best sailing seasons for Mahina Kai. Beautiful weather, good wind for our favorite southern destinations and topped off with a pre-Labor Day vacation week. Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, P-Town, then back home. Queequeg's for dinner last night was delicious as always. Now, Captain is off on a morning bike ride, Jim & I are enjoying coffee and breakfast under the sun. Forecast looks favorable for our journey tomorrow to P-Town on the outside of Cape Cod. Let the whale watch begin!

Return - Day 4
Greetings Race Fans!
After passing through a cold front early this morning, Mahina Kai discovered a 17 knots of wind from the southwest. We are having a great sail for our final leg to Narragansett Bay. ~30 nautical miles to the entrance bouy. We will probably not make the custom dock before they close for the evening. This means that the crew will likely remain onboard unable to leave the ship till morning when the vessel is cleared my imigrations. There has already been much discussion among the crew about the supply of rum and wine that may be available while docked and waiting for the border patrol officials.
A great wind, a great sun. A perfect New England day of sailing.
The water temp is now 63F a much cooler version than the 87F we experienced a few hundred miles south. Making for a comfortable ride above and below decks aboard Mahina Kai.
The mood of the crew is happy, as we can all relate to our traditional New England Sailing conditions.

Return - Day 4 Morning
Good morning Race Fans!
The crew aboard Mahina Kai was greeted by an amazing orange sunrise this morning. The clear skys and the calm seas made for a spectacular rising of the morning sun. I will never get tired of watching the sun rise and set while at sea. It is a different show every day.
Currently we are less than 80 nm from the entrance to Narragansett bay. This morning we resumed our morning ritual of fresh baked goods. Quite honestly until now it has simply been too hot down below and a little too rough to properly enjoy our breakfast treats.
Through out the night we were shadowed by s/v Momentum and s/v Fearles on AIS. AIS is an electronic position system that allows vessels to broadcast their location to other ships nearby. It's kind of ironic that s/v Fearless shared the dock with us in Bermuda and now has shared the Atlantic and the Gulf Stream with us for the past couple days.
While enjoying our fresh baked turnovers, several small pods of dolphins have stopped by to say hello. Each time they show up, I was afraid they may be saying... " So long and Thanks for all the fish" :-)
The crew is taking advantage of the calm and sunshine to dry out our foul weather gear from yesterday morning's cold front. Numerous times yesterday as I was splashed with waves and rain I kept thinking... " well I guess I can't get any wetter", with each new splash I was proven wrong.
There is some unsettled weather hugging the New England Coast so we may be enjoying ome fine new England wet weather at the end of our Journey. We look forward to getting ashore and reuniting with our friends. However, I know we will all treasure the race and the time we have had on our return journey.
